About this event

Shaping What’s Next: Rethinking workplaces for a regenerative future

As the way we work continues to evolve, so too must the spaces we work in. But how do we move beyond incremental change and create workplaces that are aspirational, adaptive, and future-fit?

This session brings together some of Australia’s most progressive thinkers and practitioners to explore what’s next for workplace design, strategy, sustainability, and productivity. From bold research insights to system-level thinking and real-world examples of circular innovation, our speakers will challenge us to rethink what’s possible—and necessary—for creating productive environments that support both human wellbeing and high-performance outcomes.

Session 2 – From insight to action – a sneak peak at the Future Focus findings

Get a first look at the early findings from CoreNet Global Australia’s Future Focus research, unpacking the emerging trends, expectations, and productivity priorities shaping our sector.

Dr Kirsten Brown

Dr Kirsten Brown is a highly respected thought leader and expert in building health and resilience in organisations for a more productive workforce. Adding value to projects by leveraging research into practical applications resulting in a positive impact on people’s work lives. Her experience is underpinned by degrees in design, real estate, commerce and a PhD in how the workplace impacts employee health.

Kirsten’s doctoral research highlights the need for a multidisciplinary holistic approach incorporating policy-based and physical elements to workplace design that will advance current practice by placing worker health and well-being at the centre of decision-making.

Kirsten has been involved in all aspects of workplace consultancy from design to research. Curiosity has been the motivation for learning and research throughout her career. This knowledge alongside practice results in highly considered outcomes underpinned by research.

In her advisory capacity, Kirsten conducts in-depth research, engages stakeholders and generates practical solutions. She advocates for a proactive, co-design approach to deliver positive outcomes for both employees and organisations.

Session 3 - From Waste to Workspace: The Circular Approach to Office Fitouts

What does a truly circular office fitout look like and what role can government play in making it the norm? This practical and forward-looking panel explores how circular economy principles are being applied in real fitout projects, and what it takes to shift from intention to implementation.

Our expert panelists will unpack the design strategies, policy levers, and metrics that matter - from design for disassembly and material reuse to procurement pathways and performance indicators. They’ll also tackle common myths around cost, complexity and compliance - and share what works when it comes to bringing internal stakeholders on the journey.

Whether you're shaping policy, managing assets, or delivering sustainable workplaces, this session offers actionable insights to help you lead with circular thinking.

Jade Whittaker, Circularity Specialist & Interior Designer

Jade’s design practice is rooted in sustainability. She is known for her circular design thinking, rigorous assessment of materials and process driven approach to create healthy and low-impact that nurture connection. Her time spent as a Senior Interior Designer at Breathe Architecture, expanded her knowledge in regenerative practices and deepened her focus on driving industry-wide change. With experience spanning multi and single residential, workplace, and furniture design, Jade continues to advocate for progressive, practical pathways to embed sustainability across the built environment.

As Jade has recently started a new role with the ACT Government at the Suburban Land Agency, she wants to note that all views shared during the event are her own.

Clayton Bristow, Founder and Managing Director, FF&3

Session 4 – Resetting expectations: lessons from Australian high-performance workspaces

Drawing on extensive research, Christhina will share what high-performance workspaces are getting right when it comes to productivity - and where there’s room to grow.

Dr Christhina Candido, Professor and Director - SHE Lab, University of Melbourne

Prof Candido is an architect with a PhD in Civil Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil) and in Environmental Science from Macquarie University (Australia). Her research interest and expertise relate to design, experience and performance of spaces. Her projects and publications are related to the fields of Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE), Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), new ways of working and learning, and climate responsive design in tropical and subtropical climates.

Prof Candido directs the SHE – Sustainable and Healthy Environments – Lab. The SHE Lab develops a program of applied research aimed at understanding how the built environment can improve sustainability and health.

Session 5 – Designing Futures: Harnessing hope, creativity, and adaptation

Through a cybernetic lens, Andrew will explore how creative, hopeful systems thinking can help us design for complexity, uncertainty, and opportunity.

Andrew Meares, Professor - Cybernetic Futures Leader, ANU School of Cybernetics
Andrew applies cybernetic approaches to how we think about, talk about and visualise "the future". Andrew's research considers how systems are built, sustained and maintained through imaginaries and infrastructures.

Andrew leads research and education experiences in cybernetic futures, the Artificial Intelligence tech stack, and manages the Cybernetic Imagination residency program. He is a co-investigator of an ongoing research project on Australia’s first digital system, the Overland Telegraph Line. He was the lead curator of the exhibition Australian Cybernetic: A Point Through Time (2022) and lead author of the exhibition book (2024).

He brings thirty years of industry experience as a Walkley award-winning photojournalist at The Sydney Morning Herald. He has served as the president of the Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery (2015-2017) and as a senior adviser to the Leader of the Opposition (2017-2019).
