Description:
Pandemics bring lasting changes to the built environment. This is the theory of Tom Fisher, Professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Minnesota and Director of the Minnesota Design Center. As a former Dean of the University’s College of Design and former Editorial Director of Progressive Architecture magazine, Tom has written numerous books and articles, and currently focuses much of his attention and research on futuristic thinking about city development and urban design. Tom is at work on a new book on what we can learn from previous pandemics and what we can expect in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As our speaker for the July program, Tom will focus his presentation on the recent pandemic and its lasting impacts on the spaces in which we live, work, shop, learn, and travel. He will talk about how this pandemic has accelerated us into a future in which physical space will have to complement and compete with digital space, and in which most people will have choices in terms of what they do remotely or face-to-face. This thought-provoking and engaging topic will inspire us in both our personal and business lives to plan for resiliency and anticipate new realities.
