Description:

Join our panelists as they discuss neurodiversity, the challenges, and benefits in the workplace.   Neurodiversity is defined as “the inclusion in a group, organization, etc. of people with different types of brain functioning”. Neurodiversity may include individuals who have dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism, ADHD, epilepsy, speech disorders, Parkinson’s disease and other non-neurotypical skills. Hiring and working with neurodiverse individuals can bring insight and creative thinking to your team, our panelists will discuss inclusive hiring and recruiting, the benefits of neurodiverse teammates and physical workplace considerations to make the environment more welcoming for everyone. 

 

Moderator:

   Dr. Caulyne Barron, Chief Academic Officer at Dunlap-Stone University

Dr. Caulyne Barron is the Chief Academic Officer at Dunlap-Stone University. Dr. Barron holds a Doctor of Education from Northeastern University in Higher Education Administration and a Masters of Education in Adult Education. As a faculty member, she teaches management and organizational behavior and supports graduate research. Active in her community, Caulyne volunteers with local youth organizations, focusing on inclusion and training, to make programs accessible to all youth and to equip adult volunteers with the skills they need to be successful. She founded and coordinates a local autism group that connects families with resources and information and has served as an educational advocate for families with IEPs. She lives with her two children, one of whom is on the autism spectrum, and her husband in southeastern Arizona.

 

Speakers:

  Jensen Mecca, Managing Associate at Modern Hire

Jensen Mecca, Ph.D., leads Modern Hire’s Assessment Design team and serves as Center for Excellence for job analysis and content development. She manages assessment design, validation, and implementation projects for several Fortune 100 clients. Jensen received her Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of Oklahoma. Her organization, Modern Hire, is a science-based hiring platform that improves hiring decisions with sophisticated candidate screening, predictive assessments, and interviewing technology. Nearly half of the Fortune 100 use Modern Hire, a technology that combines AI, predictive analytics, workflow automation, assessment, and interviewing technology in a single solution that integrates with leading HCM systems. Jensen lives in Plano, Texas, with her two corgis and one-year-old daughter Olive – all of whom may be accidental guest panelists.

 

   Kay Sargent - Senior Principal & Director of WorkPlace at HOK

With more than 35 years of experience, Kay is a recognized expert on workplace design and strategy issues. She is an award-winning designer who has worked with several Fortune 500 companies to optimize their global real estate portfolios and create innovative work environments based on their unique organizational DNA. As Co-Director of HOK’s Workplace team, a practice that supports organizations undertaking multiple projects in various locations, and a member of HOK’s Board of Directors, Kay is responsible for helping clients redefine how, when and where their people work, and supports a holistic design approach that integrates an organization’s people, processes, and technology.

Kay was recently names ASID’s Designer of Distinction for 2020. Kay is considered an industry thought leaders on workplace. She is also a Founder of the DC Chapter of UPWARD, a global network dedicated to the professional advancement of women in the workplace.

 

   Carol Simpson - Executive Director at Orbital Learning

Carol’s previous career was as an IT professional, starting as a programmer at IBM Canada, and eventually working in executive-level positions and owning and operating IT service companies.  

Today she has combined her previous professional career with her personal life by contributing to a global movement of normalizing neurodiversity in the workplace. Her two companies are: 

·                - Focus Professional Services, an IT placement agency that specializes in autistic talent.

·               -  Orbital Learning, a neurodiversity training and consulting service to organizations and employment        support service to autistic job seekers and employees. 

 

Carol is a mother of two adult sons on the autism spectrum: her older son is a mathematician studying for his PhD, and her younger son is a serious gamer who enjoys socializing abused and abandoned animals.
