Event Description:

CoreNet Global New England Chapter is a “Champion” sponsor of CREST (Commercial Real Estate Success Training). For 3 years, we have partnered with CREST to connect CoreNet Global New England sponsors and members to exceptional students, who are traditionally underrepresented in the real estate industry, for summer internships. CREST works with each employer to find the best student for the job. During the 10 week program, CREST also works with each student to develop their understanding of the real estate industry as well as their own leadership, business and communication skills. Join us to learn more about the 2021 summer program and recent success stories as well as how your company can apply and participate.

Moderator:

   Mark Watkins, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Director of Global Real Estate; CoreNet Global New England, Board of Directors and EID Initiative Leader

Mark Watkins is the Director of Global Real Estate for Thermo Fisher Scientific.  He helps lead a global portfolio of over 33M SF of diverse space, with a significant amount of international and M&A experience.  He has been with the company for nearly 20 years during which time the company has grown from a $2 billion analytical instruments company to a $25 billion world leader in life sciences, pharmaceutical and bio-tech.  He has a bachelor degree in business from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.  An active member of CoreNet, he helps to lead the New England Chapter’s EID initiative, is a member of the Real Advantage Committee and a board member of CoreNet New England.  He also serves on CoreNet’s global finance committee.

 Milton Benjamin, Program Director, CREST

Milton Benjamin is founder and president of the KAGE Growth Strategies, LLC.  The firm advises on and implements corporate supplier diversity solutions, specializing in MWBE participation in commercial real estate, workforce diversity and equity participation in CRE projects throughout greater Boston. KAGE co-founded and manages CREST (Commercial Real Estate Success Training). In 2006, he was inaugural CEO of the Initiative for a New Economy (INE), a first in the region coalition of corporations, community organizations, and the City of Boston, to launch a major initiative designed to expand the opportunities for minority owned businesses in Massachusetts. For 20 years prior, Mr. Benjamin served as President of the Massachusetts Community Development Finance Corporation (CDFC), an economic development investment corporation that provided debt and equity financing to small businesses and real estate development projects in underserved areas of the Commonwealth. Following law school (1981 grad), Mr. Benjamin was law clerk to the Honorable Frederick L. Brown at the Massachusetts Court of Appeals. He was staff attorney at the Boston Housing authority and later General Counsel and SVP for real estate development at Lena Park CDC. Mr. Benjamin serves as Trustee to the Dedham Institution for Savings, and as a board member of A Better City, Boston’s environmental, transportation, and built environment think tank. He has been a Trustee of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and an Overseer for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Benjamin holds B.S. and J.D. degrees from Northeastern University.

 

   Kevin Heffernan, AVP, Director of Transactions, Real Estate Delivery, Liberty Mutual

Kevin is the Assistant Vice President, Director of Transactions at Liberty Mutual Group in Boston.  Liberty Mutual is a Fortune 100 Company with ~$40B in revenue. He is responsible for the leased portfolio that includes 450 domestic locations and over 5 million square feet of space.  His Transaction group typically manages 150 active projects and negotiates over 1m square feet of office space per year. Kevin works with business managers in developing strategic plans for space acquisition and disposition and he implements real estate solutions that meet the business needs at the lowest price.  He is an active participant in the Corporate Emergency Response Team and he leads the real estate requirements for business acquisitions and for all large international requirements.  He is currently on the CoreNet New England Board of Directors, Secretary and the liaison for the Membership Committee. Kevin received his BA from St. Anselm College and has an MCR from CoreNet.

  

   Dakota Jones, Program Coordinator, CREST

Born and raised in Boston, Dakota Jones' first exposure to CRE was as a construction laborer at 15.  From that job, Dakota was inspired to launch his career in CRE - and to create opportunities for others to do the same.  For the last 3 years, Dakota continued that mission by managing the recruiting, matching and mentoring of CREST's Interns, and he continues to support CREST's pipeline creation as an advisor.
